WANAKA
Rob Piggott’s recent Wanaka Paintings are a renewed development of a series initially suggested by the large 1999 painting entitled Wanaka.
These abstract paintings intentionally incorporate minimal line and colour to reference, and possibly evoke, essential memories or characteristics of the place; sunshine, tussock, sky, lake, mountain, dazzling light , snow ice, or shimmering reflections on water.
The paintings come from the personal experience of the artist but may provide a possible ‘memory-trigger’ (or resonance) for the viewer. Simultaneously they can be read as purely abstract or aesthetic designs in themselves and are purposefully ‘open’ to interpretation.
