Piggott’s 1994 ‘Spiral-Songs’ evolved throughout 1999 into a simple rhythmical, playfully twisted-circuit; becoming the ‘Loop’ Series in early 2001. This series has since developed from the initial ‘works on paper’ to substantial works on canvas.
The ‘Loop Series’ are a delightful interplay of line, space and colour.
There is some reference here to the use of recorded ‘loops’ in contemporary digital music, and metaphysical ‘String” and ‘Loop Theories (regarding the nature of connectedness and separation); perhaps even the artist’s search for creative ‘loop-holes’ in what at first may seem like a closed or fixed system.
The artist believes that all the different ‘series’ of his work are like the many separate loop-holes, or creative spaces along the same continuum. He asserts that creativity does not necessarily follow a ‘straight-line development’ as implied by Western Modernist Art Theory (and some current Educational practice), but is more like a living rhythm of twists-and-turns.
