This series of paintings are visual-songs referenced by the Maori name ‘Waiata’, meaning ‘song’ or ‘chant’.
There is a free association here with traditional Maori Kowhaiwhai, spiral and triangular motifs; as well as a merging with Western Modernism, crosses and grids.
They are neither Maori, nor European; - yet they have a sense of both.
These are songs for the ‘Reo’ (voice) of the new New Zealand.
They simultaneously represent a hybrid synthesis of contemporary NZ multi-culture, whilst also manifesting personal statements in Piggott’s singular series-style.
